Why PEEK?



PEEK is recognized as having the best balance of chemical resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance among all thermoplastics. It is melt processible allowing for processing into shapes by extrusion and parts by injection molding.

Technically PEEK is part of a family of polyarylether ketones (PAEK) but the PEEK acronym is most recognized. Related chemistries based on PEK and PEKK offer unique thermal benefits to the traditional PAEK’s.

All PAEK materials are known for their exceptional chemical inertness including to saturated steam. Only a few halogenated acids like HF will attack PAEK materials. All PAEK polymers have a softening temperature of 140-150°C and a melting temperature of 370°C.

PAEK materials readily accept reinforcements and wear resistance additives such as graphite and PTFE leading to some extraordinary wear and heat resistant bearing materials for chemically tough service conditions.

PAEK materials also have V-O flammability ratings and exhibit very low smoke and toxic gas emission when exposed to flame.

KT 820NT PEEK offers an ideal balance of properties including superior machinability and cleanliness among all ketone based polymers. Its inherently higher molecular weight provides greater toughness of larger cross section shapes without the brittleness of competitive PEEK materials. KT820 NT is not affected by repeated autoclaving making it ideal for reusable medical devices. Its inertness in wide range of chemicals makes it a great fit for wet process use within semiconductor processing. KT820NT is NORSOK M-710 certified for downhole use in both sour gas and steam service and meets the most stringent flammability and low smoke generation requirements of the aerospace industry.

PEEK 450 CA30 offers the highest strength and stiffness of all ketone based polymers. It is the original of the carbon fiber reinforced PEEKs and still the most requested of all the carbon fiber reinforced PEEK materials. PEEK CA30 is not affected by repeated autoclaving making it ideal for reusable medical devices. Its inertness in wide range of chemicals makes it a great fit for wet process use within semiconductor processing. VictrexPEEK 450FC30


10-10-10 Bearing Grade PEEK

PEEK 450FC30 offers the lowest wear rate and highest PV of all ketone based polymers. It is the original of the bearing grade PEEKs and still the most requested of bearing grade 10-10-10 PEEK materials. PEEK 450FC30 containing 10% graphite, 10% carbon fiber and 10% PTFE powder is not affected by repeated autoclaving making it ideal for bushings and gears in reusable medical devices. PEEK 450FC30 is FDA compliant for direct food contact applications and meets the most stringent flammability and low smoke generation requirements of the aerospace industry.

Victrex PEEK 450FE20

PEEK 450FE20 offers the lowest coefficient of friction of all ketone based polymers. It offers unique performance among the bearing grade PEEKs by enabling sealing at lower pressures than 10-10-10 PEEKs like 450FC30 or carbon fiber reinforced grades like 450CA30 while still offering excellent wear resistance. PEEK 450FE20 contains 20% uniformly dispersed PTFE powder making it ideal for intermittent service bushings and rotors in reusable medical devices and analytical instruments. 450FE20 has a 50% lower coefficient of friction and a wear rate that is only 25% that of PEEK NT. PEEK 450FE20 is FDA compliant for direct food contact applications.

Victrex PEK HT G45

Victrex HT is an even higher performance polyketone polymer than unfilled PEEK. It is chemically a polyether ketone (PEK) polymer offering higher temperature performance than traditional PEEK based materials. Its higher temperature advantage results from a higher glass transition temperature than other PEEK based polymers. Additionally, HT provides more creep resistance than unfilled PEEK by resisting deformation under load beyond PEEK. Its higher tensile strength and flexural modulus are retained at temperatures 30°C (54°F) greater than standard PEEK.
PEEK HT’s resistance to aggressive chemical environments including those found in downhole environments makes it an upgrade to unfilled PEEK for higher temperature and higher pressure service. Common parts are:PEEK 450FE20 offers the lowest coefficient of friction of all ketone based polymers. It offers unique performance among the bearing grade PEEKs by enabling sealing at lower pressures than 10-10-10 PEEKs like 450FC30 or carbon fiber reinforced grades like 450CA30 while still offering excellent wear resistance. PEEK 450FE20 contains 20% uniformly dispersed PTFE powder making it ideal for intermittent service bushings and rotors in reusable medical devices and analytical instruments. 450FE20 has a 50% lower coefficient of friction and a wear rate that is only 25% that of PEEK NT. PEEK 450FE20 is FDA compliant for direct food contact applications.
PEEK HT is also suitable for food contact applications and for medical applications requiring autoclave sterilization. It also offers inherently low flammability and smoke emission, good dielectric properties and excellent hydrolysis resistance and up to 3 times more wear resistance than unfilled PEEK.
The most common grades of Victrex HT are HT G45 and HT G22. Both grades are unfilled, yet very strong with a modulus and room temperature strength greater than unfilled PEEK. Extruded shapes are always made from the higher viscosity G45 grade which enables large cross sections to be formed with maximum ductility and impact strength.
Victrex ST is an even higher performance polyketone polymer identified as PEKEKK. The thermal properties of ST are 10°C (18°F) higher than HT.
Glass reinforced versions of these polymers are available in resin form and may be produced in shape form on a custom basis.
The most common application for all of these higher performance ketone polymers is as insulators in downhole connectors such as those used with ESPs (electrical submersible pumps) operating in HTHP (high temperature high pressure) downhole environments. The additional strength and stiffness at temperature prevents distortion of thin walled bulkhead seal components under hydrostatic pressure. Additional uses include aerospace fasteners, gears and bearings in high speed food processing and packaging machinery and test sockets used within the semiconductor industry.
